Communication- PreK-2nd Grade (Stage1 )

Use the target language to communicate within and beyond the classroom setting.

Understand oral communication in the target language. Understand communication about religion and the Catholic Church in the target language.

Interact in the target language in various settings. Interact in the target language in Liturgy or school prayer setting.

Understand written passages in the target language.  Understand written religious materials (songs, prayers, stories of saints, Bible verses or stories) in target language.

Use the target language to present information, concepts and ideas for a variety of purposes to different audiences. Use the target language to present religious or Catholic information to different audiences (e.g., parents, other students, religious leaders) in the parish.

Show an awareness of differences between formal and informal forms of address.

Hear differences between singular and plural.

Recognize gender and number.

Respond to simple commands (e.g., stand up, sit down).

Understand and recite simple prayers.

Ask basic questions.

Respond to a number of questions and prompts that use familiar language.

Use routine courtesy expressions appropriately (e.g., Mr., Mrs., Miss, please, thank you).

Use formal and informal words of address.

Imitate sounds, words, and phrases with age- and stage-appropriate pronunciation, intonation, and inflection.

Respond to petitions using target language.

Identify the written form of familiar spoken language (e.g., simple greetings, basic vocabulary).

Identify and relate to the written form of the familiar language (e.g., simple greetings, basic vocabulary, numbers, dates, time, prayers and religious songs).

Demonstrate understanding of cognates.

Copy words, phrases, and simple prayers in the target language.

Categorize words based on meaning.

Label or identify familiar items (e.g., family members, classroom objects, pets).

Learn and present a simple prayer, religious song, dance and/or story in the target language.
